I always see people who say they dislike the movie because it strays too far from the book. And I respect that, I do! But you have to keep in mind that it differed on purpose to some degree. I read in the Visual Companion to the movie, that Selick had actually written a version that was extremely true to the book, but Gaiman and Selick agreed that that script was too faithful to the book, he wanted something different, he didn't want it to be exactly as the book was.
